SeaTwirl AB has announced a significant step forward in its endeavors to penetrate the Japanese market for vertical-axis offshore floating wind turbines. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been inked between SeaTwirl AB and Sumitomo Corporation Power & Mobility Co.,Ltd. (“SCPM”), a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, aimed at promoting SeaTwirl’s innovative wind turbine technology in Japan.

After a meticulous selection process to find a strategic partner in Japan, SeaTwirl has finalized an agreement with SCPM. The MoU outlines the collaborative efforts between the two entities to advance the adoption of SeaTwirl’s vertical-axis offshore floating wind turbines in the Japanese market. SCPM will primarily handle tasks such as client identification, marketing, negotiation, and contract management, while SeaTwirl will focus on product promotion and service offerings to potential clients.

Japan boasts vast offshore wind energy potential, with its extensive coastline, deep waters, and numerous islands. According to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), Japan holds approximately 128 GW of fixed-bottom offshore wind potential and a staggering 424 GW of floating offshore wind potential. SeaTwirl’s vertical-axis wind turbine is uniquely suited to the Japanese offshore environment due to its robust design, flexibility, and high serviceability.

Peter Laurits, Head of Global Business Development at SeaTwirl, expressed confidence in the partnership with SCPM, citing their local expertise, longstanding presence, diversified business operations, and deep industrial knowledge. Laurits emphasized SeaTwirl’s decade-long experience in vertical-axis offshore floating wind turbines and its eagerness to capitalize on the burgeoning Japanese market. He expressed pride and enthusiasm for the new opportunity this collaboration presents for SeaTwirl.

The collaboration between SeaTwirl and SCPM represents a significant stride towards tapping into Japan’s vast offshore wind energy potential and underscores SeaTwirl’s commitment to providing innovative and sustainable solutions for renewable energy generation.
