Equinix, Inc., the world’s digital infrastructure company, made a funding commitment of over S$9 million through 2028 to accelerate Singapore’s clean energy transition and innovation. In a press release, the company announced making this investment in line with the Singapore Green Plan 2030. It secured funds the funding under this program to bring together industry and academia to explore viable energy options in Singapore.

This marks a pivot in Singapore’s energy sourcing, which currently relies heavily on natural gas to meet its energy needs, by diversifying its energy mix with cleaner sources by 2035 and beyond. As part of the Singapore Green Plan, the nation aims to import up to 4 GW of low-carbon electricity by 2035—accounting for approximately 30% of its projected electricity supply.

In parallel, Singapore is actively exploring emerging low-carbon technologies such as hydrogen, geothermal energy, and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). Equinix’s funding is strategically aligned with these national goals, helping expand low-carbon energy options and accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy future.

Previously, Ember, a research organization, forecasted that Singapore would reduce its heavy reliance on gas-based electricity as renewable energy capacity increases. Based on its calculations, the report anticipated a drop in gas share in the electricity mix, which would fall from 92% in 2022 to 61% by 2035, driven by the growth of renewables in the Southeast Asian country.

First five organizations to receive Equinix grants

Yee May Leong, Managing Director, Singapore, Equinix, said, “The clean energy transition is more than a climate imperative — it is the engine of our digital and AI-driven economy. As Singapore and Asia accelerate into their next phase of digital advancement and AI-driven innovation, clean and renewable power becomes mission-critical. By backing frontier research and innovative projects, we are not only strengthening our path to sustainable infrastructure, but also helping to forge the knowledge, talent, and partnerships that will underpin Singapore’s clean energy leadership for decades to come.”

The Asia Clean Energy Coalition (ACEC): It convenes a coalition of world-leading renewable energy buyers, in collaboration with sellers and financiers, to advance enabling policy and regulatory frameworks for corporate renewable electricity procurement across Asia. Equinix partners with ACEC in its broader policy engagement to support analysis and recommendations on renewable energy programs and cross-border electricity imports across Asian markets.

Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources  (CSER): A Singapore-based think-and-do tank focused on accelerating Asia’s energy transition. Equinix and CSER will develop a credible evidence-based study to evaluate the potential deployment of nuclear power technologies for Singapore’s future energy needs.
The International Tracking Standard Foundation (I-TRACK Foundation): It is a non-profit organization that provides a robust standard for developing attribute tracking systems. Acknowledged by leading reporting frameworks as a reliable backbone for credible and auditable tracking instruments, the I-TRACK Foundation ensures credible, auditable systems and best practices that prevent double-counting, duplicate certificate issuance, and multiple attribute claims. Together with the I-TRACK Foundation, Equinix is coordinating and conducting data assessments on cross-border REC trading framework protocols.

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore):  A leading research-intensive public university with strong expertise in science and engineering is collaborating with Equinix through the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N) to study the feasibility of using non-conventional geothermal energy to support data center cooling in Singapore. The joint research will build on NTU Singapore’s long-standing research into renewable energy resources and explore whether geothermal heat beneath Singapore can be harnessed to power low-carbon cooling solutions in the future.
National University of Singapore (NUS) Energy Studies Institute (ESI): An energy policy research institute at NUS that seeks to advance the understanding of energy issues by conducting independent research and analyses. Equinix and NUS ESI will examine the technical, economic, and environmental feasibilities of securing a clean hydrogen supply chain and related infrastructure in the country.

Supporting Quotes:

Minh Anh Nguyen, Chief of Staff, Asia Clean Energy Coalition (ACEC), said, “Cross-border renewable energy collaboration is essential for Southeast Asia to scale clean energy at the pace required to meet national and regional climate goals. ACEC focuses on aligning policy, market frameworks, and industry participation to translate clean energy ambition into credible and scalable outcomes for Singapore and the region. We welcome Equinix’s support alongside other stakeholders in advancing transparent and sustainable access to renewable electricity across Asia.”

Victor Nian, Founding Co-Chairman, Centre for Strategic Energy and Resources, said, “Our collaboration with Equinix aims to evaluate the potential deployment of nuclear technologies as a cornerstone of Singapore’s future energy strategy. This initiative underscores our shared commitment to exploring transformative, low-carbon solutions that can deliver long-term energy security and sustainability.”
