The Sepang Municipal Council (MP Sepang) in Malaysia has recently installed a photovoltaic (PV) system atop its headquarters in Cyberjaya, Selangor. This move is projected to significantly slash the local authority’s electricity expenses by a noteworthy 20%.The PV system, an assembly comprising solar panels, inverters, and associated electrical and mechanical components, marks a pivotal step towards harnessing clean energy sources.

According to MP Sepang president Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain, the newly installed solar panels boast an estimated capacity of 470kWp (kilowatts peak), poised to generate approximately 602,409kWh in the inaugural year alone.

“This initiative is not only financially prudent but also aligns seamlessly with MPSepang’s commitment towards creating a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for our municipality,” stated Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain during the PV system launch ceremony at the MPSepang headquarters.

He further highlighted that the council’s endeavor is in full support of Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to transform Cyberjaya into a Smart and Low Carbon City by 2025 and envisioning a holistic, eco-friendly municipality by 2030.The contractual agreement, spanning a duration of 20 years, underscores MPSepang’s steadfast dedication to long-term environmental stewardship.

Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain revealed that this strategic collaboration with Tenaga Nasional Bhd and its subsidiary, GSPARX Sdn Bhd, exemplifies a synergy between public and private sectors in fostering renewable energy adoption. The meticulous execution of the PV system installation, spanning from April 18 to August 12 of 2022, culminated in the issuance of operational licensure on December 7 of the same year.

“With this milestone achievement, MPSepang stands poised to save RM105,422 in the inaugural year, with cumulative savings projected to reach a staggering RM6,345,016 over the contract’s lifespan,” affirmed Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain. In closing, he expressed optimism for the proliferation of similar energy-efficient initiatives across other municipal departments and corporations within Sepang.

By setting a precedent in sustainable energy adoption, MPSepang aims to inspire a paradigm shift towards cleaner, more resilient energy solutions, thus paving the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
