PetroEnergy Resources Corporation, Philippines announced that its renewable energy unit will begin commercial operations of the San Jose Solar Power Plant on 1 August. The project has a total installed capacity of 19.6 megawatts direct current (MWDC).
The solar plant is managed by San Jose Green Energy Corporation, which is a subsidiary of Rizal Green Energy Corporation. This firm is a joint venture between PetroGreen Energy Corporation, PetroEnergy’s renewable arm, and Japan-based Taisei Corporation.
The plant received its Provisional Authority to Operate from the Energy Regulatory Commission on 15 July. Approval for participation in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market was granted by the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines on 28 July. These clearances allow the facility to officially supply power to the grid as a commercial generator.
This is the second solar power facility under PetroGreen Energy to begin commercial operations in 2025. The first was the Dagohoy Solar Power Plant in Bohol, which has a capacity of 27.1 MWDC and began operations on 16 July.
Both solar projects are part of a larger portfolio managed under Rizal Green Energy Corporation. Two more projects are currently under construction. These include the 40 MWDC Limbauan Solar Power Plant in Isabela and the 25 MWDC Bugallon Solar Power Plant in Pangasinan. Both are expected to be physically completed in 2025.
Apart from these larger facilities, there are smaller renewable energy efforts taking place. A rooftop solar initiative in Laguna installed a 150-kilowatt peak (kWp) system at a municipal government building for self-use. Another solar microgrid project in Palawan is underway with a 500-kWp installation aimed at supplying electricity to areas not connected to the main grid.
Additionally, a waste-to-energy pilot facility in a small community in Cebu is in development. The project aims to process biodegradable waste to generate biogas for heating and electricity generation with an expected capacity of 50 kilowatts.
