Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs recently launched the “Wind and Solar Energy Improvement Plan” to increase offshore wind power and solar photovoltaics by 8.2 GW by 2026.

The country also developed a forward-looking geothermal energy plan. The organization stated, “In addition to introducing international drilling capacity to promote deep geothermal this year, we will also continue to expand shallow geothermal performance at five locations across Taiwan.”

The Ministry of Economic Affairs held a year-end press conference on Jan 13. Economic Minister Guo Zhihui pointed out that last year, offshore wind power generated 8.005 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, and it is estimated that this year and next year it will complete another 2.2 GW, adding 11 billion kilowatt-hours of green power. In terms of photovoltaics, 14.926 billion kWh was generated last year, and it was originally scheduled to reach 20 GW by the end of this year. “But I’m sorry, it was slower in the past due to some reasons.” There is still a gap of about 6 GW, which will be filled and increased by about 6.5 billion kWh of green electricity this year and next.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs plans to continue providing incentives, supporting methods, completion timelines, etc. and will collect opinions from all sectors to complete the mechanism. Regarding the direction of the business selection rules for Phase 3-3, it is being handed over to the Energy Department for research and analysis. Considering the limited space at fixed sites, offshore wind power is expected to expand to deeper water areas. However, there is no specific timetable for the floating wind farm demonstration plan
