The Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with VinEnergo Energy Joint Stock Company to explore investment opportunities for a large-scale wind power project in the province.
The agreement outlines cooperation on research and field surveys for the proposed Gia Lai Wind Power Plant Complex.
Two-Phase Development with Regional Scale
Under the MoU, both parties will coordinate closely to advance studies and preparatory work for the project, which is planned in two phases.
The first phase is expected to deliver a capacity of around 2,000 MW, with a subsequent expansion to approximately 3,000 MW in the second phase. Once completed, the project is expected to emerge as one of the largest wind power clusters in the region.
The development aims to provide a stable and substantial source of clean energy to Vietnam’s national grid, supporting rising electricity demand while enhancing energy security.
The total investment for the project is estimated at about VND 210,000 billion, equivalent to nearly USD 8 billion. The project is anticipated to act as a key driver of socio-economic development in Gia Lai province.
Nguyen Huu Que, Vice Chairman of Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee, said, “The Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee highly appreciates VinEnergo’s capacity in implementing large-scale renewable energy projects. We are committed to creating favorable conditions, simplifying administrative procedures and supporting investors to soon research and implement projects to contribute to improving the province’s competitiveness and improving the lives of local people.”
Nguyen Huong Giang, Deputy General Director of VinEnergo Company, said, “VinEnergo is proud to be selected by the Gia Lai Provincial People’s Committee as a strategic partner, participating in research and development of large-scale power source projects, especially wind power with potential up to 5GW, along with solar power projects and energy storage systems. We are committed to investing methodically, long-term, and complying with legal regulations to ensure economic efficiency and harmonize interests between the State, localities, businesses and people.”
Expanding Renewable Portfolio
VinEnergo is currently advancing multiple renewable energy projects across Vietnam. These include wind projects in Ha Tinh and Gia Lai, as well as solar and floating solar plants in Dien Bien and Lai Chau.
Globally, the company has outlined plans to develop 100 GW of renewable energy capacity over the next three years across key markets such as North America, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia. It is also exploring opportunities in Central Asia and Africa.
VinEnergo has already secured initial agreements for international project portfolios in Denmark, Sweden, and the Philippines, with a combined capacity of 10 GW.
