In 2023, the global wind energy sector experienced an unprecedented surge, with wind turbine orders reaching a record-breaking 155 gigawatts (GW), marking a substantial increase of 16 GW compared to the previous year. Leading this charge was China, which solidified its position as a powerhouse in renewable energy by securing an astounding 100 GW of wind turbine orders.  This was revealed by Wood Mackenzie report.

This remarkable achievement represented China’s second consecutive year of surpassing the 90 GW mark in order intake, predominantly fueled by the escalating demand for onshore wind projects within the country.

While China dominated the global wind turbine market, Western markets also witnessed significant growth, collectively procuring 55 GW of orders in 2023. This surge in orders, particularly notable in the fourth quarter, contributed to a remarkable market recovery, characterized by a 26% year-on-year increase in order intake. Europe emerged as a frontrunner within the Western markets, leading with 19 GW of wind turbine orders, closely followed by North America, which secured 17 GW. This regional breakdown underscores the unwavering commitment of these regions to expanding their renewable energy capacities, despite challenges posed by the global energy landscape.

The surge in wind turbine orders not only demonstrated the increasing global demand for renewable energy but also translated into substantial investments within the sector. The estimated $83 billion global investment in wind turbines in 2023 reflects a growing financial commitment to renewable energy projects worldwide. This investment not only drives innovation and technological advancements within the wind energy sector but also underscores the economic viability and sustainability of renewable energy sources in meeting global energy needs. As nations strive to mitigate the impacts of climate change and transition towards cleaner energy sources, the remarkable growth in wind turbine orders in 2023 signifies a pivotal moment in the global energy transition towards a more sustainable future.
