Chinese EV battery Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the electric vehicle battery giant, will focus on innovative solutions in solar panels to enhance its performance.

CATL said in its statement that it is focusing on the R&D of perovskite cells, which is said to be the most promising methods to drive new improvements in solar panel performance. Additionally, it collaborated with JA Solar Technology Co., China’s fourth-biggest module maker, for scientific innovations, marketing and storage.

CATL said, “We are building a pilot test line,” without providing any further details.

With the global data indicating record number of solar panels installment this year, which is accelerated by China’s continual deployment of clean energy. As also reported by IEA (International Energy Agency) that  global investment in the technology this year will exceed outlay on oil production for the first time.

It is also reported that electric vehicle-to-battery producer BYD can produce about 5 gigawatts of panels a year, which began solar manufacturing in 2008 with having  capacity to build wafers, cells and modules, both domestically and overseas.

Tesla is also reported to have increased solar deployments by 40% in the first quarter compared with the same period a year earlier.  As per a market report, battery makers are showing special interest in the sector as there is seen a rising trend in home and industrial systems being paired with energy storage. The report say that ~ 19 gigawatts of residential solar systems in the US alone will add a battery between 2023 and 2030.
