Iskandar Investment Bhd (IIB), the leading developer of Iskandar Puteri (Malaysia) in Johor, has taken a significant stride towards sustainability by formalizing a collaboration agreement with Cenergi SEA Bhd, a subsidiary of UEM Group Bhd. This collaboration aims to spearhead various renewable energy (RE) exploration initiatives, marking a pivotal moment in IIB’s journey towards achieving its net-zero aspirations in Medini.

According to Datuk Idzham Mohd Hashim, President/CEO of IIB, this collaboration signifies a critical step towards establishing the first net-zero carbon central business district (CBD), focusing on digital innovation and global business services (GBS). By leveraging the expertise of both entities, they aim to make substantial progress towards a cleaner and greener future, benefiting generations to come.

The collaboration’s primary objective is to harness the strengths of IIB and Cenergi to delve into various RE exploration initiatives, including the utilization of renewable energy certificates (RECs) to meet IIB’s immediate sustainability goals. One of the key targets is to achieve 50% renewable energy consumption support by 2030 across all of IIB’s assets, employing a multifaceted approach. This includes exploring the purchase of around 4,000 RECs to offset IIB’s current carbon emissions.

In addition to purchasing RECs, Cenergi will provide technical support to IIB in developing its own RECs through future renewable energy projects. This strategic initiative not only aids in reducing IIB’s carbon footprint but also generates tradable instruments that bolster the growth of the clean energy market.

Hairol Azizi Tajudin, CEO of Cenergi Group, emphasized another approach, which involves supplying solar energy to power the Medini Net Zero Carbon Central Business District and IIB’s RE: Zone, aligning with the National Energy Transition Roadmap. Through this partnership, they aim to uphold IIB’s commitment to sustainability while contributing to the development of renewable energy infrastructure in the region.

This collaboration between IIB and Cenergi underscores the growing importance of renewable energy in urban development initiatives. By embracing sustainable practices and fostering partnerships with industry leaders, Iskandar Puteri is poised to emerge as a model for eco-friendly urban planning and development.
