Swedish-Swiss leader in electrification and automation ABB Ltd technology is setting its sights on bolstering its presence in Malaysia by forging partnerships to strengthen crucial projects in the energy sector. Anders Maltesen, ABB’s Asia President for the Energy Industries, revealed that the multinational corporation is actively engaged in supporting pivotal endeavours within Malaysia, including the Batang Ai initiative, the PETRONAS liquefied natural gas two floating facility, and the nation’s largest crude oil refinery in Melaka.

In an exclusive interview with Bernama, Maltesen emphasized ABB’s commitment to nurturing collaborations in Malaysia, aiming to accelerate the nation’s net-zero ambitions. Despite the growing momentum towards renewable energy sources, Maltesen highlighted the enduring role of oil and gas in the energy landscape, projecting its significance in the mix by 2050. He stressed the imperative of leveraging both existing and emerging technologies to facilitate a balanced transition towards sustainability.

Maltesen underscored the pivotal role of technology in driving a progressive energy transition, emphasizing that the trajectory isn’t binary but rather a symbiosis of traditional and renewable sources. He articulated, “Today, technology enables a progressive energy transition. Therefore, the transition is not an ‘either/or’ scenario but rather an ‘and’ situation – where we aim to minimize carbon emissions per kWh from hydrocarbons and ensure that any new additions are net-zero.”

However, achieving net-zero status demands substantial investments, raising critical questions about funding mechanisms. Maltesen elucidated the significance of robust support from governmental bodies, both central and state, to facilitate and expedite the energy transition journey.

He emphasized that a collaborative approach fosters equitable competition in the renewable energy sector, consequently amplifying job opportunities and stimulating economic growth. The collaborative ethos advocated by ABB aligns with Malaysia’s ambitions to pivot towards sustainable energy paradigms while concurrently optimizing its existing energy infrastructure.

By harnessing cutting-edge technologies and fostering strategic partnerships, ABB aims to play a pivotal role in fortifying Malaysia’s position as a frontrunner in the global energy transition. As ABB navigates the dynamic energy landscape in Malaysia, its endeavours underscore a broader narrative of technological innovation, sustainability, and collaborative partnership. With a steadfast commitment to advancing Malaysia’s energy transition agenda, ABB emerges as a key catalyst poised to shape the trajectory of the nation’s energy future.
