Aboitiz Power’s subsidiary, Aboitiz Solar Power, Inc., has forged a strategic alliance with AFRY to embark on the construction of a pioneering solar photovoltaic plant in Negros Occidental province. This collaborative endeavor, known as the Calatrava project, aims to establish a formidable 172 megawatt-peak solar installation across approximately 143 hectares of land characterized by gently undulating terrain.

In a statement, AFRY said the Calatrava project will occupy around 143 hectares of “relatively flat terrain” with rolling slopes. The project’s design involves the utilization of fixed ground-mounted solar panels meticulously positioned to optimise sunlight absorption and energy generation. Through an intricate network, these panels will be seamlessly integrated and interconnected with the Calatrava substation via a robust 230-kilovolt voltage infrastructure. This connectivity ensures efficient transmission of the harnessed solar energy into the power grid, facilitating its distribution to homes, businesses, and industries across the region.

AFRY, renowned for its expertise in engineering and sustainable infrastructure solutions, assumes a pivotal role in the Calatrava project. Their involvement spans various critical aspects, including project management assistance, comprehensive design review, and essential support services. Furthermore, AFRY will orchestrate the intricate interconnection process, ensuring seamless integration with the existing substation infrastructure. This multifaceted collaboration underscores a commitment to operational excellence and adherence to stringent quality standards throughout the project’s lifecycle.

Anticipated to commence operations by the culmination of 2024, the Calatrava solar plant represents a significant milestone in the nation’s renewable energy trajectory. By harnessing the abundant solar resources prevalent in the region, the project is poised to make a substantial contribution to the country’s energy transition objectives. Notably, the initiative aligns with global imperatives to mitigate climate change and foster sustainable development by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting cleaner, renewable energy alternatives.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the Calatrava project holds immense socioeconomic potential, fostering job creation, economic growth, and enhanced energy security within the local community. Moreover, its establishment reinforces the Philippines’ position as a burgeoning hub for renewable energy investments, attracting further interest and catalyzing the proliferation of clean energy initiatives nationwide.

In essence, the collaboration between Aboitiz Power and AFRY epitomizes a concerted effort to drive sustainable progress and cultivate a greener, more resilient energy landscape for generations to come. Through innovation, partnership, and unwavering dedication, the Calatrava solar project symbolizes a beacon of hope in the global pursuit of a more sustainable and equitable future.
