Aboitiz Renewables Inc. (ARI), the renewable energy subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower), has launched its 173-megawatt peak (MWp) Calatrava Solar Project in Negros Occidental, Philippines. The project is the largest solar facility to date in Aboitiz Power’s solar energy portfolio.

The Calatrava Solar Project is the fifth solar facility activated by AboitizPower. The company has been expanding its renewable energy portfolio, which now includes several solar, geothermal, and battery storage projects.

In addition to the Calatrava Solar Project, AboitizPower recently commissioned two other major solar projects in the Philippines. These include the 159 MWp Laoag Solar Plant and the 94 MWp Cayanga-Bugallon Solar Plant, both located in Pangasinan. These facilities are part of AboitizPower’s efforts to enhance the country’s renewable energy generation.

The company has also completed the 45 MW Armenia Solar Plant in Tarlac, the 17 MW Tiwi Binary Geothermal Power Plant in Albay, and the 24 MW Magat Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Isabela. As of now, AboitizPower has commissioned a total of 512 megawatts (MW) of energy projects across various technologies.

In addition to its renewable energy projects, AboitizPower invests in thermal power plants to support the Philippines’ baseload and peak energy demands. The company is working towards its target of developing 3,600 MW of new renewable energy capacity by 2030. This will contribute to a balanced generation portfolio of 9,200 MW, with at least 50% of the total capacity coming from renewable energy sources.

The Calatrava Solar Project, along with other recently developed facilities like the Laoag and Cayanga-Bugallon Solar Plants, adds more renewable energy to the national grid and supports the Philippines’ goal of transitioning to a cleaner energy mix.
