JERA and ExxonMobil have collaborated to build low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia production projects in the United States. Anchored at ExxonMobil’s Baytown Complex in Houston, Texas, this aims to erect the world’s largest facility dedicated to producing low-carbon variants of hydrogen and ammonia. Anticipated to commence operations in 2028, the project holds the promise of significant annual capacities, projecting around 900,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen and over a million tonnes of low-carbon ammonia.

The partnership delineates various facets of their partnership, including the exploration of JERA’s potential ownership stake in the project and the procurement of approximately 500,000 tonnes of low-carbon ammonia annually for Japan, underlining the strategic significance of the alliance.

Steven Winn, JERA’s Senior Managing Executive Officer and Chief Global Strategist underscored the pivotal role of cooperation among industry frontrunners in establishing robust supply chains for vital commodities such as ammonia and hydrogen. He emphasized the transformative impact of such collaboration in facilitating the global transition towards a decarbonized society, particularly in the realm of thermal power generation.

A key highlight of this initiative is ExxonMobil’s proactive stance towards investing in carbon capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen technologies, aligning with broader environmental imperatives to mitigate climate change and curtail greenhouse gas emissions. By championing low-carbon production methodologies, the project exemplifies a resolute commitment to environmental sustainability and underscores the escalating emphasis on clean energy alternatives in the industrial landscape.

The envisioned timeline for the project’s inception in 2028 reveals the intricate planning, meticulous development, and meticulous execution required for an undertaking of this magnitude. As stakeholders gear up to navigate the complexities and challenges inherent in such a transformative initiative, the JERA-ExxonMobil partnership stands poised to catalyze a paradigm shift towards a greener, more sustainable energy future, resonating far beyond the confines of the United States.
