Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) has announced that it will supply a steam turbine and generator for the Patuha Geothermal Power Plant Unit 2 in West Java, Indonesia. The order was placed by PT Inti Karya Persada Tehnik (IKPT), a subsidiary of Toyo Engineering Corporation and the EPC contractor for the project. The Patuha Geothermal Power Plant is owned and operated by PT Geo Dipa Energi, an Indonesian state-owned company.

The new unit, scheduled to begin operations in 2027, will have a generating capacity of 60.3 megawatts (MW). Once completed, this expansion will double the power generation capacity of the plant, increasing it to 110MW.

Indonesia has the world’s second-largest geothermal resources, with an estimated potential capacity of 30 gigawatts (GW). The country is expanding its geothermal power generation capacity to meet growing electricity demand while aiming to reduce carbon emissions. According to Indonesia’s Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL 2021–2030), the government intends to add approximately 40.6GW of power generation capacity by 2030. Geothermal power is expected to contribute 3.35GW, accounting for 8% of the planned capacity.

Toshiba has a strong history of supporting geothermal projects in Indonesia. The company has previously delivered six steam turbines and generators for geothermal plants in the country, with a combined capacity of 311MW. These include equipment for the Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant, Patuha Geothermal Power Plant Unit 1, and Lumut Balai Geothermal Power Plant Unit 1.

The equipment at Patuha Unit 1 uses Toshiba’s EtaPRO™ system, which monitors equipment performance and predicts potential issues to enhance reliability. The same proven technology will now be extended to the Unit 2 project, ensuring stable operations and power supply.

Toshiba has also contributed to geothermal power development in Japan. One of its projects, the Onikobe Geothermal Power Plant, has an installed capacity of 15MW. The company has supported similar projects globally with geothermal product offerings ranging from 1MW to 200MW, emphasizing the use of clean and constant energy.
