Chinese solar manufacturer LONGi has announced a new record for solar cell efficiency, reaching 27.81% for its Hybrid Interdigitated Back Contact (HIBC) crystalline silicon solar cell.

The figure was certified by Germany’s Institute for Solar Energy Research Hamelin (ISFH), the company said in a statement. The result marks a new milestone in the photoelectric conversion efficiency of monocrystalline silicon photovoltaic (PV) cells.

LONGi has made a series of advances in recent years. In November 2022, it set a record at 26.81%, before raising it to 27.3% in May 2024. The company has since achieved successive improvements, culminating in the latest result of 27.81%.

The HIBC Cells

The HIBC cell was developed by LONGi’s Central Research Institute, which redesigned the cell structure and materials to enhance both optical management and carrier transport. The company said the advancement could increase the power density of PV modules.

LONGi said it continues to invest in R&D and advanced manufacturing. It described the latest breakthrough as further evidence of its commitment to innovation in the solar sector.

About LONGi

Founded in 2000, LONGi focuses on solar technology and energy solutions. Its operations include the production of mono silicon wafers, solar cells and modules, distributed solar systems, green energy solutions, and hydrogen equipment.
