The Nusantara Sembcorp Solar Energi Power Plant, Indonesia’s first large-scale solar and energy storage project, has been launched by PT Sembcorp Renewables Indonesia and PT PLN Nusantara Renewables. This project combines solar energy generation with battery storage to provide a steady supply of electricity.

The facility spans 87 hectares in Nusantara, Indonesia. It includes a 50-megawatt solar farm and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 14.2 megawatt-hours. The storage system allows electricity generated during sunny periods to be stored and used later, improving energy availability during periods of lower solar output.

This is the first major solar project in Indonesia undertaken by Sembcorp Industries. The company collaborated with PLN Nusantara Renewables to incorporate advanced solar and energy storage technologies into the plant.

Apart from this initiative, Indonesia is working on other renewable energy projects. The Cirata Floating Solar Plant in West Java is under construction and will generate 145 megawatts of power. Developed by PT Pembangkitan Jawa-Bali in partnership with Masdar, this floating solar plant will utilize space on water reservoirs, reducing the need for land while producing clean energy.

Geothermal energy is another area of focus in Indonesia’s renewable energy plans. The country operates several geothermal plants, including the Wayang Windu and Sarulla facilities, which tap into underground heat to generate electricity. Indonesia has one of the world’s largest geothermal reserves and is expanding its capacity to meet growing energy demands.

Indonesia is aiming for renewable energy to make up 23% of its total energy consumption by 2025. By building solar plants, integrating battery storage, and utilizing geothermal resources, the country is diversifying its energy sources and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
