RGE and TotalEnergies have agreed to build a solar power plant with a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Riau Province, Indonesia. The project will be developed in stages through their joint venture company, Singa Renewables (Singa), which is owned equally by both firms.
The official agreement was signed on 28 May 2025 at the Presidential Palace. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron were present at the announcement. The solar plant and battery storage system are expected to provide energy for both local use and export.
Once operational, the plant will supply clean electricity to green industrial sites in the Riau Province. Some of the electricity will also be exported to Singapore. This step is part of a broader effort to support the ASEAN Power Grid and expand energy trade in the region.
The companies aim to use this project to help develop Indonesia’s solar energy sector. This includes creating jobs in solar and battery technology, engineering, and grid operations. The plan also includes support for building a supply chain for solar and storage equipment within Indonesia.
This project links to Indonesia’s national plan to increase renewable energy use, known as the National Transformation Strategy (Asta Cita). The facility will help supply energy to industrial areas and reduce the reliance on fossil fuels in parts of the country.
In addition to the Riau solar project, there are several smaller renewable projects underway across Indonesia. These include local solar installations on university campuses in Central Java and East Kalimantan, each under 1 MW, aimed at research and training. Other projects include off-grid solar and micro-hydro installations developed by local cooperatives in West Nusa Tenggara to support small rural businesses.
