Sembcorp Industries has announced a new clean energy project that it will develop and operate in India. The company, through its unit Sembcorp Green Infra Private Limited, will develop and operate a 50 megawatt (MW) renewable energy project. The contract was awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI).
This project will supply electricity around the clock. To make that possible, Sembcorp will use different renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, and a battery storage system. The total installed capacity for these sources will reach about 300 MW.
The power generated from the project will be sold to SECI under a 25-year agreement. Construction and setup are expected to take two years from the date the agreement is signed.
Sembcorp plans to fund the project through a mix of its own capital and borrowed funds. When finished, the project will add to Sembcorp’s renewable energy portfolio in India, taking its gross renewable capacity in the country above 6.5 gigawatts (GW).
This project is part of SECI’s broader plan to develop 1.2 GW of round-the-clock renewable power linked to India’s interstate transmission system. Sembcorp’s involvement shows its ongoing effort to support clean electricity using multiple renewable sources combined with energy storage.
Besides this project, Sembcorp has worked on other clean energy solutions in India. These include installing rooftop solar panels on public and industrial buildings across southern states, totaling about 8 MW. The company has also tested hybrid energy systems that mix solar, wind, and battery storage in microgrid projects. One such pilot in Telangana uses 2 MW of solar, 1 MW of wind, and 500 kWh of storage to serve rural loads.
The 50MW round-the-clock project will be another step in Sembcorp’s ongoing work in the region, aiming to deliver consistent power using a mix of renewables and battery support.
