A new wind energy project is moving forward in Quezon Province, Philippines. Alternergy Holdings, through its unit Alabat Wind Power Corporation, is building a wind farm on Alabat Island. It will be the first wind farm in the area and the first to be built along the Pacific coast of the country.
The project received $57.52 million (around PHP 3.26 billion) in funding. This is part of a larger loan package worth $93.62 million (PHP 5.3 billion) arranged with Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation. Several groups supported the process, including legal, technical, and insurance teams.
The wind farm will have 64 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity. Construction has started and is expected to finish by the end of 2025. When completed, the project is expected to supply clean electricity to tens of thousands of homes. It was also selected in the government’s second green energy auction, held in 2023.
Aside from this wind farm, other small renewable energy projects are taking place in different parts of the Philippines. In Nueva Ecija, a 10 MW solar plant is being tested with battery storage to help supply power at night. In Bukidnon, a remote area in Mindanao, a small hybrid plant combining wind and solar power has been built to help off-grid farming villages.
The Philippine Department of Energy has plans to increase clean energy use across the country. This includes more solar, wind, and energy storage in areas not yet fully connected to the national grid. The goal is to bring power to more places while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Alternergy is also planning more projects and hopes to reach 500 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2026. The Alabat Wind Project is one of the first steps in this effort.
